A joint operation by law enforcement agencies resulted in the seizure of approximately $10 million worth of illegal drugs at the Freeport Container Port.
Officer In Charge of the Drug Enforcement Unit, Superintendent Michael Thurston provided details of the drug bust at a press event in Grand Bahama. He said, “on Wednesday, 1st January, 2025 a team of officers from Drug Enforcement Unit, Bahamas Customs and the United States Drug Enforcement Agency conducted a search of a red 40 foot container at the Freeport Container Port. That search resulted in the discovery of 498 kilo packages of suspected cocaine.”
Thurston also spoke to what could have happened had the drugs reached the streets. “You can you imagine if this hits the streets and when we can get it at the port of entry before it trickles down to the public or it is smuggled into the United States it becomes a major problem and much more difficult to actually detect.”
Representing Bahamas Customs was Superintendent Katrina McPhee who expressed that the success of the operation exemplified what happens when agencies work towards a common goal. “This is a very proud moment for us and we intend to so more to continue our efforts to keep the Ports safe thereby also keeping The Bahamas and fulfilling our roles in conjunction with other countries such as the United States.”
No arrests have been made in connection with the illegal drugs.
