A Defence force vessel traced a fleeing Dominican vessel on Sunday morning. This occurred at 1:30am as the Dominican vessel raced through the Great Bahama Bank after hauling a huge catch. Senior Lieutenant of The Royal Bahamas Police force, William Sturrup led the crew as they chased down the 70-foot Ronnye Laden down with 60,000 lbs of lobster and scale fish. This was the second sighting of the vessel which slipped through the fingers of the HMBS Madeira a few weeks ago.
This was a major victory for the crew and a firsthand experience on the effects of poaching for the new agriculture and fisheries. Minister The Hon. Michael Pintard was shocked by the find and saluted the HMBS team on the capture and referred to an agreement made years ago with the Dominican Republic’s government to deter persistent Dominican poachers. The Dominican crew is expected in court this week to face charges.
