Member of Parliament for Central and South Abaco, the Hon. John Pinder recently gave an update on construction of the Abaco hurricane shelter. The shelter recently suffered a setback with the collapse of several roof trusses.
Pinder told ZNS news the trusses have been replaced. He said, “this is summertime, there’s storms that pop in on a regular basis some we can see coming and some just develop over us. Some trusses did fall down, those trusses have been replaced. They are in Abaco. Work had never stopped, the crew was out there the very next morning continuing the work. We’re still looking at the same timeline of completion.”
On the capacity of the shelter, Pinder said the shelter was never intended to accommodate the entire population. “That would be a building the would be way too costly, way too big to manage on a regular basis. It was designed for that community and from that design they’re going to further polish that design and make sure that it is a pilot for other hurricane shelters throughout Abaco and throughout The Bahamas. But really we need to not think about one shelter for all of Abaco but a shelter in each of the communities that can also be multi-use.”
The Abaco Shelter was previously set for completion at the end of this year.
