It was reported on Wednesday that an altercation occurred at the Bahamas Department of Correctional Services. A mentally ill man was attacked by his cellmate with a bucket. He was taken to hospital and was said to be in stable condition. Over the weekend a 60 year old male resident of the prison was killed after being stabbed by another inmate.
Minister of National Security, the Hon. Wayne Munroe was asked for comment on the matter. He said, “this is a challenge that you have with a housing facility built in the 1950s to house two to three hundred people that is why this administration has been very kinetic in our efforts too bring about a new facility. The fact of the matter is that there’s no indoor lavatories in maximum security, persons must use slop buckets. Those slop buckets most be emptied every morning, that’s that fact. Unless and until we get the new high, medium security facility that will continue every day.”
BDOCS Commissioner, Doan Cleare echoed the sentiments of the minister saying the mental health block of the facility is grossing over crowded.
