The Attorney responsible for overseeing the transfer of power of attorney and property from Ingrid Carey to her caretaker Mervie Knowles expressed yesterday that he has no regrets over his actions.

Kevin M. Russell, who is also a relative of Mervie Knowles told ZNS News that he spoke with Carey and found that she was of sound mind and aware of her decision to transfer her estate to Knowles. Russell said he was informed elderly Carey was found living alone by a community nurse who visited the home.

He said, “she contacted social services who place Ms. Carey into the Rand Memorial Hospital and then called Ms. Knowles to go down and Ms. Knowles went down there and then took here in as a resident.”

The Grand Bahama Attorney said that Knowles approached him for assistance with the transfer of property rights which includes a mortgage facility and a conveyance in the names of Philip and Ingrid Carey.  “I helped them and I sat down at length in the car with Ms. Carey and asking her in no uncertain terms are you sure, is that what you want and she told me yes this is what I want.  In addition to that she also told me that she would like to sign a power of attorney over to Ms. Knowles so that Ms. Knowles can take are of her personal affairs.  I say ok I don’t have no problem with that either.”

Russell said Carey wanted Knowles to continue mortgage payments on her home and that it was not necessary to notify Carey’s family members of her decision.  When asked if he had any regrets about his actions in the situation he said, “in my mind’s eye if I know it was wrong I would not have done it.”

Kevin Russell’s comments came after public outcry about a news report which included Carey’s daughter, Philippa Carey accusing Mervie Knowles of wrongdoing in the acquisition of Carey’s property and power of attorney.
