Parliamentarians were questioned by reporters on Wednesday about the possible impact of US tariffs imposed on goods from Canada, Mexico and China.
Minister of Foreign Affairs, the Hon. Fred Mitchell said, “I’m not an economist but just from what I’m reading since we import must of our food from the United States if there’s an increase in tariffs then that’s a knock on costs here and you have to be sure that people understand that control of the economy also is determined by a lot of external forces.”
Leader of the Opposition, the Hon. Michael Pintard expressed concern on the issue. He said, “we believe that there will be a definite on The Bahamas and given the track record on this administration in not be able to help us when there are inflation that’s imported we are even more concerned now.”
The Trump administration has imposed 25% tariffs on Canada and Mexico and 20% on China.
