Students at C.I. Gibson High School will now have use of three additional brand-new computer systems courtesy of Success Code Camp (SSC), a community-minded, non-profit organization focused on promoting careers in Information Technology (IT). “These computers are coming to us at a good time,” said the school’s principal, Herbert Oembler. “There is always a need to expand and sometimes replace the ones we have. It’s also encouraging to see young people taking the lead when it comes to education.” In its first year of operation Success Code Camp was able to introduce 10 children between the ages of 12–16-years-old to coding for website and game development via Python, a general purpose and high-level programming language. “SSC was born out of a desire to do something positive for and with the youth in the community I grew up in.

It’s about planting a seed and helping kids to realize that there are so many opportunities for them in the field of IT,” said the camp’s co-founder, Shacoy Mullings, an entrepreneur. “Coding is a skillset valued the world over. That’s the perspective we’re promoting in creating this annual camp.” In an era where people spend a large chunk of their day interacting with technology, the camp’s mission is timely and relevant. “Whenever we are given an opportunity to partner with industry or to have our students take advantage of something new and innovative, we do so,” said Mrs Carla Hall, computer instructor at C.I. Gibson. “Thank you to this great group of young people who took the time to impart their knowledge to the next generation.” For two weeks in July, certified Python instructor and coding enthusiast Jean Joseph facilitated the information rich, training sessions. He was assisted by seasoned, secondary educator, Paul Taylor and Rodney Bain.

During a brief handover presentation Monday, December 9, camp co-founder Victoria Mullings expressed gratitude to the principal and administration of C.I Gibson for hosting the free inaugural camp which included lunch for students. “We’re happy to be able to make this donation to C.I. Gibson. Every time we call upon Mr. Oembler, he and his staff accommodate us,” she said. “Computers are an essential tool for students and teachers. We hope these computers will be used for more coding projects in the near future.” Sponsors contributing to Success Code Camp 2019, included AFS Insurance, Network One, Kelly’s Home Center, Onit Systems, Sammy’s Chicken, I want It, Jay Fitness, Selvin Basden, Cameron Reckley, Hubert Edwards Global and Guardian 96.9FM. For further details visit Success Code Camp on Facebook or email keypointsonsulting@gmail.com.
