Commissioner of Police, Shanta Knowles released the 2024 crime statistics at a press event on Monday. According to Knowles major crime in The Bahamas has decreased by 10%, crime in the Northern Bahamas also decreased by 10%.
Focusing on the Northern Bahamas and Family Islands the Commissioner declared that murders increased in 2024 over 2023. “Three murders were recorded in the Family Islands which is an increase from one incident in 2023 and twelve murders were recorded in Grand Bahama and Northern Bahamas district which is an increase from 3 murders in 2023.”
Crimes against property in the Northern Bahamas also decreased. “The regional decreases in crimes against the property for 2024 at a rate of 7% in New Providence, 16% in Grand Bahama and 19% in the Family Islands district.”
“Rape decreased by 6% with 46 cases compared to 49 cases in 2023. There was no change in unlawful sexual intercourse cases when compared to 2023 with 90 reports in total. The majority of the sexual offences victims knew their assailants.”
