The Ministry of Youth, Sports and Culture held its Culture Under The Stars event over the weekend at Collins House.  This year’s event showcased the talents of ten high school pop bands.

Ministry of Youth, Sports and Culture Senior Cultural Affairs Officer, Sonovia Pierre spoke with ZNS News on the sidelines of the event.  She said, “this is the second Culture Under The Stars that were having. This year is the pop band version.  The bands that we have featured tonight are GHS Magic Ivy,  R.M. Bailey Elevation Band, the St. Anne’s Blue Waves and the C.V. Bethel New Horizons Band.  And they are top winners in the band category from the E. Clement Bethel National Arts Festival. Now,  they’re not the only ones because we have St. George’s Jag Pop Band.  We have bands from Inagua, Abaco and all of them but these ones just happened to be here in New Providence and we thought it would just be awesome to showcase the high school talent.”

Minister of Youth, Sports and Culture, the Hon. Mario Bowleg was also in attendance.  He expressed that culture is much alive.  “I give hats off to the musicians and the teachers at the schools who are making sure that the culture remains alive and for these students to be focused.  I don’t want the Bahamian people to believe they are only playing by ear, they read music also too.  I’m just so much impressed that we gat to let the country know what we gat and the future is bright when it comes to our musicians.”

The event was held as part of National Cultural Heritage Month.
