Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Tourism, Investments and Aviation, the Hon. Chester Cooper visited the island of Grand Bahama this week where he toured the existing domestic and international airport terminals.
While speaking with reporters Mr. Cooper assured that the redevelopment of the international terminal is still on track. He said, “actively we’re doing a design build for the new terminal facility. And let me just say soon we’ll see that coming out of the ground. I think the people of Grand Bahama will be very pleased.”
The Minister also give an update on the demolition work at the airport. “We’ve gutted all of the interior and cleaned it up. It was a complete mess since Hurricane Dorian destroyed it. We are actively engaged with a number of cargo companies who are extremely interested in doing some things here. We’ve had to pause to consider these opportunities that might be lucrative for Grand Bahama. So we put a pause on the demolition for the moment. It’s a possibility that we will use the space for cargo as we build the other sides of the airport.”
The airport project will be constructed in phases at a cost of approximately $200 million.
