Chairman of the Bahamas Trade Commission, Senator Barry Griffin appeared at a press briefing at the Office of the Prime Minister on Thursday where he discussed the government’s move to diversify trade in order to lower the cost of living.

Griffin told reporters that the government’s cost of living goals are being realized in real time. He also said in addition to the recent cost savings on eggs the cost of other food items will also decrease as merchants source products from new markets. “Everything from chicken and poultry, pork, beef, kidney beans, lima beans, limes a whole slew of canned goods such as tuna, sardines, corned beef, rice.”

CLX Bahamas Chief Operations Officer, Ceri Howells spoke about trading directly with manufacturing countries. He said, “with these direct trade routes we now shorten the time from farm to table. So we receive fresher goods in The Bahamas but no only that we have more opportunity to trade inter-regionally and sort of use the products that were accustomed to, the products that we have grown up using.”

Senator Griffin also revealed that the government is working with stores in the Family Islands to change their suppliers as well.
