When a student displaced by Hurricane Dorian asked Allied Supply general manager Kwame Selver for “a couple dollars” to buy food, little could the twelfth grader imagine he would land a job for himself and three friends. “I thought, ‘I could give him some cash to get something to eat or I could give him some good money, something more substantial than a plate of food – the opportunity to work for us,’” said Mr Selver who operates the plumbing, electrical and hardware supply store on Carmichael Road.

The Bahamas Disaster Reconstruction Authority opened its Abaco Small Home Repair Program Office in Marsh Harbour on Monday to assist Bahamians whose homes were damaged or destroyed by Hurricane Dorian. Prime Minister the Most Hon. Dr. Hubert Minnis launched the program on February 10 with the opening of the Authority’s Freeport, Grand Bahama office. In this vein, a Workshop on Recovery Policy, Recovery Plan, and the Institutional Arrangements for Implementation is being held to prepare the country to better address the impact of catastrophic storm.
The government is taking progressive steps to address the poor road conditions on the new overpass bridge and on the service road at the Fishing Hole Road that leads from Freeport into West Grand Bahama. During a press conference at the bridge on Saturday, February 15, 2020 Minister of State for Grand Bahama, Senator the Hon. Kwasi Thompson called the work being carried out on the service road and the bridge “the beginning of the end of the process.”
