Minister of Labour and the Public Service, the Hon. Pia Glover-Rolle released written and audio statements on Sunday responding to potential industrial action by several unions in the country.
According to Glover-Rolle the government has continued to engage in open and constructive dialogue with unions. She said, “myself as the Minister of Labour as well as our Director of Labour, our ministry’s Labour Relations Unit have consistently communicated and met with union leaders over the course of the past year, over the past few weeks in fact. Our Prime Minister, himself, has personally reached out to the TUC President, Obie Ferguson, as he reaches out to all union leaders and ensures that every concern is given attention.”
The Minister deemed the proposed action by labour unions premature and unnecessary. She also questioned the objective of a national strike. “What’s the purpose that this disruption will serve when the government is not only listening but actively working towards solutions. So there’s no break down in communication. Some matters are easily and quickly resolved and some matters take a little more time.”
Multiple union leaders released statements on Sunday revealing whether on not their organizations would be taking part in any industrial action.
