The Ministry of Health & Wellness is committed to advancing healthcare skills among students in the Nursing Cadet Programme through ongoing Heartsaver CPR & AED training. This training provides instruction on CPR and how to use an automated external defibrillator (AED) in a safe, timely and effective manner. Specific focus is also given to improving survival rates by performing high-quality CPR and how to assist a choking infant, child or adult. While the training has commenced in New Providence, plans to extend the CPR & AED to the Family Island Nursing Cadets are underway.

This month, seventy-eight (78) nursing cadets from schools across New Providence (Anatol Rogers High School, Akhepran International Academy, Aquinas College, C.C. Sweeting Senior High School, C.I. Gibson Senior High School, C.R. Walker Senior High School, Charles W. Saunders Baptist School, Kingsway Academy, Bahamas Academy) successfully completed the training. Director of Nursing at the Ministry, Mrs. Gina Dean described the training as a good first step in garnering the interest of students to serve in healthcare.

The Nursing Cadet Programme which runs from October to April, affords secondary school students in New Providence and the Family Islands the opportunity to be exposed to the nursing profession through a blend of theory-based activities and hands-on experiences in the clinic and hospital settings. Programme organizers emphasize that the goals of the programme are to attract bright and ambitious students with positive attitudes and an aptitude towards a career in nursing. Interested students can apply to join the Nursing Cadet Programme through their schools.
