Member of Parliament for Central and South Abaco, the Hon. John Pinder spoke with ZNS News on Wednesday about a blackout that affected his constituency.
Pinder said, “they tried to turn on some communities early, early this morning, but then they had to do some more work. The last update that I was given is that they would be turning on the communities one at a time until we’re all put back on power.”
Pinder also commended the staff of Bahamas Power and Light (BPL) for their efforts. “The BPL workers on the ground in Abaco do an exceptional job. Abaco’s distribution lines are still needing to fixed and upgraded in certain spots but the BPL in Abaco is doing an absolute exceptional job. They can definitely use some more linesmen and some more resources to help given the size of Abaco and the many cays that they have to cover as well. But the guys on the ground are doing an exceptional job and its not often that we have an island wide outage.”
BPL released a statement on the interruption in service on Abaco. It read, “every effort is being made to restore power to its customers in Central and South Abaco and the Cays, adding that supply to North Abaco was never interrupted and service was restored to impacted cays by standby generation.”
BPL attributed the blackout to generation issues at the Wilson City Power Station.
