Declaring that Grand Bahama has truly recovered, Minister for Grand Bahama, the Hon. Ginger Moxey is sharing her thoughts on recovery efforts on the island after the passage of the storm in September 2019.

In order to assist families find closure after their loved ones were lost during the hurricane, the government has passed legislation allowing persons to be declared dead.  Moxey said, “today, five years after Dorian those who would have lost loved ones would have still been waiting another two years in order to have full closure where they can move on with their lives.  That means in order to claim insurance or receive any of the benefits that they would have received from losing their loved ones.”

The Minister also spoke about rebuilding efforts in East Grand Bahama which was the hardest hit area on the island.  “We’ve done so much work in Grand Bahama.  When we came to office there was still so much more to be done.  So we would have restored the administrative office, the district council office.  We would have initiated national insurance and social services offices again and through the Beautiful Grand Bahama program that was launched through the Ministry for Grand Bahama we were able to employ so many of the residents from the East Grand Bahama community who would’ve assisted in rebuilding their communities with the program.”

There has been a concentrated attempt to assist those whose homes were damaged by the storm with small home repairs.  Moxey said, “we did have some new builds.  We also had many homes that have been repaired and restored but we’re working hard to get a lot more done.”

Minister Moxey said there is over $2 billion of investments on the ground in Grand Bahama.  She believes that these investments, which are in various stages of development, are a great sign of what is to come for Grand Bahama.
