The Ministry of Social Services, Information and Broadcasting is hosting a series of town hall meetings on disabilities in the southern Bahamas this week.

On Thursday a meeting was held in Cabbage Hill, Crooked Island. Social services minister, the Hon. Myles Laroda told ZNS News a priority of the initiative is registering persons with disabilities. He said, “as minister I wanted to touch every one of these islands and make the citizens aware of the services that are provided by social services.”

Laroda added, “I’ve approved a lot of assistance for people in the out islands whether dealing with their eyes or their knees or hips or other illnesses.” While on the island of Acklins on Wednesday, Laroda presented a brand new wheelchair to 96 year old Ethel Williams.”

According to the minister the founding fathers of The Bahamas wanted people who live in the most remote islands to have the same access as those who live in New Providence. He said, “we think its well worth our resources to go into an island where it may be sparsely populated.”

The next stop for the town hall series is Long Cay.
