Five of the six Members of Parliament who were named and suspended for two sittings in the House Of Assembly on Wednesday spoke with members of the media after leaving the House.
Leader of the Opposition, the Hon. Michael Pintard spoke for the group at the press event. He addressed the injuries sustained by the Sergeant At Arms and Deputy Speaker of the House saying, “both of them were injured when officers rushed in to attempt to prevent the mace from being thrown out of the House. At no point did any member of our team touch either of them or contributed to their injury.”
Pintard said he and his colleagues took the actions they believe were necessary. Former Prime Minister and Member for Killarney, the Most Hon. Dr. Hubert Minnis was not named and was not among those attending the press event. Pintard said, “the persons who have been suspended, all of us stand in solidarity and we know that what has been done is unjust. When asked if Minnis stands in solidarity with the Party Pintard said, “you should ask him.”
Leader of Government Business in the House and Member of Parliament for Freetown, the Hon. Wayne Munroe was asked for comment on whether the Speaker is being biased and or coached outside of the House Of Assembly. He said, “they formed their own views about what they say the rules are and the want to insist on having their own way. That is not the way that the system works. The system works that the Speaker is in charge, you respect the rulings of the Speaker.”
