Disinfecting to limit spread of COVID-19

The Department of Environmental Health Services has embarked on a disinfecting exercise, as a preventive measure to limit the spread of COVID-19. The cleaning of visibly dirty surfaces such as roads and sidewalks followed by disinfection is a best practice measure for prevention of COVID-19 throughout the communities, says Melony McKenzie, director of the DEHS.

Min. of Health the Hon. Dr. Duane Sands explained that as of Sunday, 22nd March 2020 the Ministry of Health confirmed four cases of COVID-19 in The Bahamas. The cases are in New Providence. During a press conference at the Ministry, he added that seven people are in a quarantine facility and 35 people have been released from quarantine. He said the first case remains in hospital in stable condition and is being managed in isolation -- a 61-year-old female resident of New Providence who does not have relevant travel history. The Health Minister noted that health officials continue to follow the condition of the three other COVID-19 positive cases who remain in isolation at home and do not require hospitalization at this time; contact tracing is still being conducted.

Health Minister Provides Update on COVID-19

Minister of Health, the Hon. Dr. Duane Sands said that the country was advised on Sunday, March 15, 2020 that The Bahamas had a confirmed case of COVID-19/Coronavirus. Now there are two additional cases bringing the total number of confirmed cases to three. “The Prime Minister of the Commonwealth of The Bahamas has outlined the national response, and I wish to repeat his charge to all Bahamians that social distancing, proper hygiene, hand washing, and specific recommendations to avoid group gatherings will make a difference to decrease the spread of the virus,” Dr. Sands stated during a press conference at the Ministry of Health, Wednesday, March 18, 2020.
