US Charge D’Affaires in The Bahamas, Kimberly Furnish spoke with ZNS News on Wednesday about the recent United States indictment of Bahamians including law enforcement officers in connection with drug trafficking.

Furnish said, “we stand with The Bahamas always.  Good democracies like The Bahamas and the United States enforce anti-corruption and transparency and good governance and we continue that work together.  We stand steadfast with you in terms of the fight against all sorts of corruption and malfeasance.  The trafficking of guns and drugs and people are important to both our countries, so we stand together in continuing that fight.”

The US diplomat said the indictment provides an opportunity.  “It’s a powerful opportunity for The Bahamas to continue that fight against corruption and to continue to work towards transparency.  So we’ll continue with our programs as we have for the past 51 years working together for good governance in both our countries.”

When asked about the firearms reaching the Bahamas from a US manufacturer Furnish said, “we also have some wonderful programs together that are anti-gun.”

The US Embassy in The Bahamas reaffirmed its commitment to work with Bahamian law enforcement to stop the transshipment of guns.
