Today, twenty (20) Haitian nationals appeared before Assistant Chief Magistrate Kara Turnquest- Deveaux in Magistrate’s Court No. 2. Sixteen were convicted of Overstaying, and four of Illegal Landing. All defendants pleaded guilty.
On April 22, thirteen (13) Haitian nationals, one (1) Colombian female, and one (1) Jamaican male appeared before Senior Magistrate Algernon Allen Jr., where they were convicted of Overstaying and Illegal Landing.
On April 21, eighteen (18) Haitian nationals appeared before Chief Magistrate Ancella Evans in Magistrate’s Court No. 9 and were also convicted of Overstaying and Illegal Landing.
In all matters, the courts imposed fines ranging from $300.00 to $3,000.00, along with custodial sentences ranging from 1 month to 1 year at the Bahamas Department of Correctional Services (BDOCS). Upon completion of fines or sentences, all individuals were ordered to be handed over to the Department of Immigration for deportation.
The Department’s Deportation and Removal Units executed deportation orders for fifty-eight
(58) foreign nationals. These included:
- 55 Haitian nationals
- 2 Jamaican nationals
- 1 Peruvian national
