The Bahamas Nurses Union has been ordered by Justice Camille Darville Gomez to hold elections after a court battle among members of the union.
The action was brought by five executives of the union against President Muriel Lightbourne and Sherran Rolle, Treasurer.
Among other things, the group sought to have the court deem the suspensions of 1st Vice President Sheniqua Cox and Secretary General Shavone Brennen unlawful. Brennen also sought salary payments and reimbursements totaling $30,945.06. Lightbourne’s membership and presidency were also in dispute as the executive group claimed that she was in breach of the union’s constitution and unlawfully holding the office.
The court refused the claim that Muriel Lightbourne’s presidency was unlawful. Justice Gomez declared the suspensions of the 1st Vice President and Secretary General void and unconstitutional. The court also concluded that Shavone Brennen was entitled to payment of any unpaid salary withheld due to her unlawful suspension. However, Brennen’s claim for reimbursement in the amount of $15,696.06 was refused.
The executive of the union was given 45 days to take steps to regularize the union’s financial records and to hold elections by November 13th, 2026 with candidate nominations before October 14th.
