Grand Bahama Chamber of Commerce President, Dillon Knowles is voicing concern about the need for qualified workers on the island of Grand Bahama to fill the high number of job opening.
Knowles told ZNS News that people have to be willing to get the training and take that steps needed to fill open positions. He said, “the Shipyard just brought in its newest dry dock and its going to have another one coming in a couple of months after that. Those are huge for the employment side of things. They’re going to need hundreds more skilled labourers but we don’t have hundreds more skilled labourers.”
The Chamber President said the Chamber is working with the training institutions in the country. “The Chamber has been working with the National Training Agency and others, BTVI, to try to help to push the unemployed and in some cases the unemployable into developing the kinds of skills that they would be able to offer to the kinds of openings that are happening on Grand Bahama Island.”
Knowles said that unemployed Grand Bahama residents should have the opportunity to fill jobs available on Grand Bahama before an influx of outsiders arrive to compete for the positions.
