Assistant Director of the Department of Agriculture is commenting on the issue of chicken feed shortage. This issue was uncovered when the ZNS News team visited the layer chicken program at Government High School.

Andrew Pinder told ZNS News, “the Department of Agriculture initiated a chicken layer program as part of our emergency response to COVID-19. It began in 2020 and over the past two and half years we distributed 30,000 layer chicks to farmers, backyard gardeners, schools and other institutions as a means to increasing or supporting total egg production in The Bahamas.”

Pinder says that the government provided technical support and feed to those participating in the program until the birds were twenty six weeks. After which time the participants are responsible for feed sourcing and the sustainment of their operation.
