Government officials led by Prime Minister the Hon. Philip Davis observed the 7th anniversary of the passing of Hurricane Dorian at a ceremony held at the Office of the Prime Minister in New Providence on Tuesday.
Mr. Davis said, “today we pause to remember those whose lives were taken in Abaco and Grand Bahama. We honour their memory. We hold their families in our hearts and we pray that God will continue to strengthen and comfort them and bring restoration and healing.
Hurricane Dorian made landfall in The Bahamas on September 1st, 2019 first on Abaco then on Grand Bahama. Dorian was a catastrophic category 5 hurricane that took many lives and caused massive devastation.
Mr. Davis said, “we remember the survivors, those who endured the unimaginable and then began again with little left to call their own.”
The Prime Minister also said that the anniversary of Dorian bring renewed attention to the responsibility that followed to rebuild stronger, strengthen disaster preparedness and ensure that the lessons of 2019 are not forgotten. “Seven years on, we measure ourselves by what we have done with the lessons Dorian taught us. That preparation is not a choice. That resilience is a responsibility. That no island and no settlement can be left behind. We rebuild and we grow in their honor,” Mr. Davis said.
A moment of silence was observed following the Prime Minister’s remarks.
