The Minister responsible for the Disaster Reconstruction Authority (DRA), the Hon. Myles Laroda gave an update in the House Of Assembly on the home repairs efforts of the DRA.
Laroda said, “I understand that the pie is only so big. I don’t question the benevolence of the former government but you’re talking about individuals who are still needing help because they have lost all of their belongings. Ten thousand dollars was just not simply enough. So we have, yet again, a lot of these same individuals who have had assistance is still applying for assistance.”
The Minister said the government remains committed to providing assistance to those in need of home repairs. “Just want to assure those residents in Grand Bahama, in Abaco, we saw damage in Bimini, that some of the assistance that’s being provided is not just for individuals who had suffered storm damage but people of the community who have received assistance from other governments who are just living in squalored conditions. You have the elderly, you have the infirmed you have people who need the help of the government and the PLP has always been an organization that would help those individuals.”
