The Minister responsible for Social Services, the Hon. Myles Laroda recently gave an update on the government’s gender policy. Stakeholders are concerned that the work done on the initiative has stalled since the sudden passing of the late Minister of Social Services, Broadcasting and Information, the Hon. Obie Wilchcombe.
Laroda told reporters, “this is a fluid situation. Its ongoing, there’s gonna be further consultation. You know when we brought the piece of legislation earlier on this year there were those who were concerned that it did not go far enough. The former Minister indicated that, you know, it was a start and we’re prepared as a government to listen to those concerns and see if we can find common ground to address them.”
Laroda further stated, “The Bahamas is a country of laws. We believe in the rule of law. And so this government just like every government that has gone before and that will come after because it is a global village and we don’t live in it by ourselves. To have a legal framework regime that is acceptable to not only us as a community but also the international community, who we rely on for goods and services and support.”
