An early morning fire occurred in Bailey Town, Bimini on Wednesday that has destroyed several structures leaving multiple families homeless.
Member of Parliament for Bimini and the Berry Islands, Randy Rolle was on the island assessing the damage and meeting with residents. He told ZNS News, “we have a community fire started shortly after six, you know, the thing about it is now all hands are on deck…the entire community to help and bring some containment to it.”
The Member of Parliament was asked whether there is a fire truck on the island. He said, “we have all available resources are on the ground. And so, although it appears that we may have lost about six homes. It appears that we have no injuries and the entire community came together. There is a fire truck that on the scene now that came from south. There is a pump truck, Resorts World brought their pump truck as well.”
Bimini Resident, Naria Rolle recounted that she was awakened by the sound of cracking in her home. She discovered a wall outlet was on fire and tried to use a fire extinguisher but it did not work. The home that Rolle shares with her pregnant daughter was completely destroyed in the blaze.
“When you struggle most of your life when you get to a place where you feel comfortable with your life and for that to just be yanked away from you, just in the blink of an eye. I’m a single parent, you know, I have a daughter in college. It just…in an instant.”
Minister of Social Service, Sen. Hon. Barbara Cartwright released a statement later on Wednesday saying that the ministry is performing assessment to determine the ongoing needs for the families affected by the fire.
