Earthquake tremors were felt in Jamaica on Saturday afternoon.

Bahamas Honorary Consul in Jamaica Alveta Knight gave an update on the impact of the earthquake on the island. She said, “the earthquake was a 5.1, it affected the eastern part of Jamaica. The overall impact was negligible in terms of loss of life and damage to persons and property. It was very nerve racking experience with the shaking of buildings especially those who were resident on very high floors in certain buildings. But other than that there is no loss of life or damage so far reported. Students have indicated that they were a bit shaken by the passage of the earthquake, went very quickly, but all as it stands now is well. If there are any further updates or any changes in that position the government of The Bahamas will be notified.”

The last earthquake in Jamaica was in 1993.
