The National Chairman of the Free National Movement (FNM), Dr. Duane Sands is addressing rumours of a convention after calls were made by former Deputy Prime Minister, Desmond Bannister in an open letter circulated on social media for the Party to call a convention after being defeated in the West Grand Bahama and Bimini by-election.
Sands said that the FNM has had numerous meetings post the by-election and a convention is not currently being planned. “Constitutionally conventions are to be held in the Free National Movement every two years. The last convention was held in 2022 and so we are due for a convention next year. And convention should be held in October of the year of convention. So the Central Council as the second highest body, shy of convention, has the ability to alter the timing with the concurrence of a significant majority of the delegates of the Central Council,” he said.
The FNM National Chairman continued, “we are not actively engaged in planning a convention so there will be no convention in December or January or February. Beyond that I can’t say anything more.”
