In February, Minister of Tourism, Investments and Aviation, the Hon. Chester Cooper announced the expansion of the Freeport Harbour that included the development of a cruise port and water park. The project is a partnership between Royal Caribbean, ITM Group, and MSC.
Grand Bahama Port Authority (GBPA) Chief Investment Officer, Derek Newbold recently gave an update on the negotiation process for the project. He said, “we are close to finalizing negotiations with the existing cruise port and the stakeholders that are investing there.”
According to Newbold the harbour expansion would be able to accommodate large ships like Oasis and Icon class vessels.
He also commented on the potential amount of tourists expected to visit Grand Bahama after the Freeport Harbour and Carnival Cruise Line projects are complete. “We will easily see somewhere in the region of five and a half maybe six million cruise passengers coming and visiting our shores in the next two to three years.”
Newbold says an announcement should be made later this year.
