Residents of the island of Grand Bahama celebrated the Bahamas’ 53rd Independence Anniversary with its annual pre-Independence Day Ecumenical Service and Cultural Show on Independence Park in Freeport on Thursday, July 9, 2026.
The Ecumenical Service was led by the Grand Bahama Christian Council.
Prayers of repentance, prayers for the government and the nation and prayers for families and youth were offered by various pastors during the service. In his Independence address, President of the Grand Bahama Christian Council, Rev. Kenneth Lewis, said that the God of Heaven has a great plan for The Bahamas, and has remained with the nation over the past 53 years.
“We honor our Constitution, we honor our democratic system of government, we honor our traditions passed from our parents and grandparents, and today we stress not only our independence, but our inter-dependence on each other and the indivisible liberty for all Bahamians,” said Rev. Lewis.
Minister for Grand Bahama, the Hon. Ginger Moxey carried out the Inspection of the Guard just before midnight, and fireworks ushered in the 53rd Independence Anniversary of The Bahamas.
