Eighty-five summer students immersed themselves in Bahamian culture during a five-day Heritage Camp hosted in the Golden Isles constituency. The program, organized by Golden Isles MP and Minister of the Environment and Natural Resources, Hon. Vaughn P. Miller, was held at the Remnant Tabernacle Gymnasium.
Camp coordinators Henry and Dr. Ann Higgins noted that students engaged in both spiritual and cultural enrichment. They learned the Books of the Bible as well as Bahamian traditions such as liturgical dance, folk dance steps, and the heritage of Junkanoo from Africa to The Bahamas.
Participants also received hands-on training in Junkanoo music, learning to play traditional instruments such as the tum-tum and bass drums, cowbells, and scraping instruments. Dr. Ann Higgins shared her excitement, saying:
“Culture is who we are. The students not only performed the Limbo dance but also showcased their talent as the girls played drums and shook cowbells.”
Minister Miller emphasized the importance of such initiatives in shaping the next generation:
“This type of setting allows children to meet new people and strengthen their social skills. They develop friendships, learn teamwork, and grow together. In unity there is strength, and much success. Environments like this go a long way in helping children with their personal growth and development.”
The camp concluded on August 15, 2025, leaving participants with a deeper appreciation of their cultural heritage and strengthened community bonds.
