During her contribution to the 2025-2026 budget debate in the House of Assembly on Monday, Minister of Transport and Energy, the Hon. Jobeth Coleby-Davis spoke about the country meeting the targets outlined in the National Energy Policy.
The policy targets 30% renewable energy deployment by 2030. The government has signed numerous power purchase agreements for the construction of solar plants on several islands across the country. The introduction of liquified natural gas in electricity generation has also been announced.
Coleby-Davis said, “currently we’re marked at 7% renewable in our country. The completion of these projects is projected that by 2030, our target was 30% by 2030, is projected to bring us approximately to 33% surpassing the national target of 30%.”
The Minister also told Parliamentarians about the implementation of phase one of the energy road map. “So our customers about extensive outages or appliances having issues. This transformation also ensures stable and predictable pricing, levelized cost of energy, something every household and business can depend on. It also means introducing clean, renewable energy into our system. And lastly, for those in the audience considering a career in energy the initiative offers extensive skills training that will make our energy workers in The Bahamas the best skilled workforce, by far, in all the Caribbean.”
Coleby-Davis emphasized that the partnership agreement signed between the government and Island Grid Solutions takes away the burden and cost that Bahamas Power and Light incurred having to rent and fuel generators.
