An anonymous donation has made it possible for the purchase of a hyperbaric chamber for the island of Abaco.
Dr. George Charite spoke with ZNS News about the importance of the medical equipment especially for divers. He said, “we had several cases within the last one to two years where patients have suffered the bends. We had a few of them that even lost their lives because there wasn’t no hyperbaric oxygen treatment available on the island.”
Dr. Charite also explained how this medical procedure works. “We take the air pressure to about two to three times higher than the normal air pressure. Under these conditions you can supply lots of oxygen to the ear, to the lungs and to various tissues in the body.”
According to Dr. Charite the service will be provided for free especially to divers and those who cannot afford it.
