Minister for Grand Bahama, the Hon. Ginger Moxey has embarked on a journey to spread the message of Bahamian pride and the importance of Independence to all Grand Bahamian students. Bishop Michael Eldon High School, the Minister’s alma mater was the starting point.
Minister Moxey took part in the Monday morning (February 27) assembly, led by students from grade 7B, and encouraged the Warriors to make every effort to be a part of the nation’s celebrations that will highlight the 50th Independence of The Bahamas.
“We have charted a course toward prosperity and progress, and continue to build and develop as a nation,” Minister Moxey told the students and Administration, during the special assembly in the school’s auditorium.
“Admittedly, we have faced many challenges along the way, but we have also achieved great success in tourism, finance, and culture and have become a proud and vibrant nation.
“As we celebrate our 50th independence, we must acknowledge our accomplishments, shortcomings, take stock of where we are as a nation and commit to charting a course for the future that is inclusive, equitable, and sustainable.”
Minister Moxey said this extraordinary occasion for the nation should be celebrated by Bahamians residing throughout the length and breadth of The Bahamas and the diaspora, because it represents half a century of freedom, democracy, and the establishment of true Bahamian Pride.
The Minister told the student Warriors that as young people, they too have an essential role in shaping the nation’s future. She told them that they were not only the leaders of tomorrow, rather, they are the leaders of today, and it is up to them to build on the progress that have been made and take the Bahamas to even greater heights.
“For this reason, I encourage all Warriors to participate in the ‘Road to 50’ celebrations on Grand Bahama. Seize every opportunity to show your Bahamian Pride, and remember to look toward the future of our nation with hope. The Road to 50 looks incredibly bright, but with you students at the helm, I’m genuinely excited to see what lies ahead for our beautiful Bahamas!”
As the country moves closer to celebrating its golden jubilee, a number of activities and events have been planned, many of which involve Bahamian students directly, including a speech contest, a talent show, an art competition, a school and class board creative competition and other activities.
Minister Moxey takes her message of the importance of this year’s independence and her encouragement to all students to become involved in playing a part in the activities to all of the schools on Grand Bahama in the coming weeks.
