The Minister of Health and Wellness, the Hon. Dr. Michael Darville spoke to reporters about the health challenges of the Bahamian population and COVID-19. He said, “we need to do better. We need to be able to eat better. We need to be able to exercise and we need to be able to practice and preach prevention. My mother always used to tell me that ‘an ounce of prevention is better than a pound of cure’ and the Ministry of Health now is moving to preventative care, trying to keep people out of tertiary institution, trying to keep people healthy and beginning to push programs that will allow that to happen. And so going forward you will begin to see our team, our wellness team throughout The Bahamas preaching the necessity in order for us to eat properly, the necessity for us to do some physical activity to keep our diabetes, hypertension under control and to prevent end stage organ disease such as kidney failure.”
When asked about COVID-19 the minister said, “we’re not too concerned with the amount of numbers presenting at our private and public institutions.”
