Prime Minister the Hon. Philip Davis and MSC Executive Chairman – Cruise Division, Pierfrancesco Vago spoke about the company’s presence and future opportunities on the island of Grand Bahama this week. The men were speaking at a groundbreaking event for MSC’s Sandy Cay development.
Mr. Davis told attendees, “in Grand Bahama, MSC is part of the redevelopment of the Grand Lucayan and transformation of the Freeport Harbour. Across Ocean Cay, Freeport, and the Grand Lucayan, the MSC group’s investment in The Bahamas now approaches $1.5 billion with more than 1,500 direct jobs expected. That is not a passing interest; that is a long-term partnership with the Bahamian people. We ought to recognize it and accept it as that.”
The relationship between MSC and Grand Bahama goes back at least 25 years with its operations at the Freeport Container Port. Mr. Vago said, “our long-standing investments in the Freeport Container Port reflect our confidence in the future of The Bahamas and in the Grand Bahama role as the gateway for global commerce.”
The Cruise Division Chairman also spoke to the company’s investment in the Freeport Harbour, saying it will become a modern, multi-user gateway with the capacity for six ships. “Billy Cay… another distinctive destination to that evolving tourism landscape along with the development of MSC Beach Resort.”
Vago also encouraged Bahamians to get ready for the opportunities that will become available. He said, “to the entrepreneurs, creators, and young people of The Bahamas, I want to offer this challenge. Ask yourselves: what problem can I solve, what can I contribute, what service is missing, and how can I be part of the opportunities that these developments bring to The Bahamas?”
