Subsequent to the death of an inmate of the Bahamas Department of Corrections [BDOCS] in hospital, the Minister of National Security if speaking out on prison security.

The Hon. Wayne Munroe told ZNS News, “we receive visits from the psychiatric staff at Sandilands, not as frequent as we would like so the Cabinet has approved the hiring, for the first time, to be on staff at BDOCS itself, a psychiatrist, a psychologist and other mental health professionals.”

The Minister went further, “we’ve had a number of incidents in cells with inmates, those who are mentally challenged and those who are not. One of the aims of the prison is to provide a safe environment in incarceration we continue to work towards that end.”
