Senate President Lashell Adderley congratulated Senator Michela Barnett-Ellis on her appointment and welcomed her to the Upper Chamber, Monday, February 7, 2022 during a swearing-in ceremony. Senator Barnett-Ellis was presented her Instrument and Letter of Appointment to the Senate on Friday by Governor General His Excellency the Most Hon. Sir Cornelius A. Smith.

The President said she looks forward to the new senator’s contributions and implored her to acquaint herself with the Senate Rules as it is her intention to “strictly” enforce them.

“My job as Senate President is to ensure that the issues presented in this Chamber receive a fair hearing from all sides. As previously stated, I intend to conduct this role impartially and without favour to any one person, party or affiliation.”

The President remarked that the Senate has placed a “strong” emphasis on outreach and service; and while thanking senators for their “unselfish” contributions, she invited Senator Barnett-Ellis to also participate in the various bipartisan outreach programs as senators seek to uplift and care for the needs of others.

Responding, Senator Barnett-Ellis said she will endeavor to approach debates with a view to bringing as many of her colleagues opposite with her and listen to their contributions to see where there is “fertile” ground for a consensus. She said, “I will faithfully discharge my duty to hold the members opposite accountable and ensure that all legislation approved in this place is in the best interest of The Bahamas and Bahamians.”

She extended thanks to everyone for their well wishes and committed to continue to do her part towards the advancement of The Bahamas.
