The government is moving forward with plans to raise the minimum wage in the country to $260 per week. The bill to make the move the law of the land is being debated in the House of Assembly this week.

Minister with responsibility for labour, the Hon. Keith Bell contributed to the debate on Wednesday. He told Parliamentarians, “what we are going to do is we’re going to introduce, rather, increase minimum wage to $260, that is not open to debate or discussion, that is it. Once that is done, we will then now begin the debate as to what component or what measure that we will adopt in this country in respect to a livable wage. That calls for widespread deep consultation with the private sector, the unions and of course with government and that is what we will do.”

Bell expressed pleasure that in fourteen month the Davis administration has concluded this major objective.
