The United States has upgraded its travel advisory on The Bahamas in the wake of the country’s latest spate of murders that now stands at 19 since the start of 2024.
Prime Minister, the Hon. Philip responded to the move while attending an event on Monday. He said, “its unfortunate sometimes the message the way its couched sends shockwaves amongst our citizenry but they need not to worry about those because nothing has impacted the country. Each country has a duty to tell their citizens about matters that is of concern to them and that’s what that was about.”
Also weighing in was Leader of the Opposition, the Hon. Michael Pintard who said “it’s important to move with a sense of urgency to guard against reputational damage and this is something I spoke about specifically almost a month ago that the government has to guard against reputational damage. Now it must finesse that message very carefully so that the international community know that tourists are not being impacted, not that that makes it any more consoling for us who are Bahamians, but it is important for them to get that message out to the international community.”
News of the new advisory was carried widely on news outlets across the United States.
