Minister of Works and Family Island Affairs, the Hon. Clay Sweeting gave a update on the demolition on shantytowns in the country on Monday. The latest demolition exercise took place on the island of Abaco where approximately 300 unregulated structures were destroyed.
Sweeting told reporters, “it’s progressing well and we haven’t had any incidents. The persons are aware that they built without proper building approval. Its environment concerns, we also have concerns with health and safety, so it’s progressing well.”
Demolition exercises are also slated for the island of Eleuthera. “I think nationally people realize that we are serious. It’s not all talk likes been done in the past and we continue to move without incident for the most part because we have a holistic approach, the task force is committed with different ministries and we assure that we do it to the letter.”
The destruction of unregulated communities is also planned for the islands of Long Island, Andros and Exuma.
