A 35 year old man died while in the custody of police at the Fox Hill Police Station on Thursday. According to police the man was being removed from his holding cell, to be transported to court, when he began resisting officers.
Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP), Anton Rahming was on the scene where he provided details of the incident. He said, “they took him to from the cell and as they did so this individual began to resist the officers stating that he wish not to go to court. The officers attempted to handcuff him. At this time he held on to one of the officers. Those officers who were also present tried to assist with taking him from that officer. Eventually as they subdued him they realized that he became unresponsive.”
The man was pronounced dead after being examined by EMS personnel.
ACP Rahming further explained that two officers were joined by two more officers in the effort to subdued the man. He also said officers used the amount of force needed to subdue the man and that the deceased has no known pre-existing conditions.
The Assistance Commissioner also responded to questions about security at the Fox Hill Police Station where another man escaped custody a week prior. He said, “well certainly these two incidents, they are separate, and the circumstances, of course, they are totally different. And so this particular incident we can expect that there will be an investigation and we’ll determine how far the information will take us.”
An autopsy will be performed to determine cause of death.
