A female visitor to the country lost her life in a boating accident on Tuesday.  The boat belonging to Blue Lagoon capsized in waters close to Blue Lagoon Island.

Police Press Liaison Officer, Chief Superintendent Chrislyn Skippings was on the scene on Blue Lagoon Island where she briefed reporters.  She said, “it is reported that half hour into the ride the vessel experienced rough seas in the area which resulted in the boat taking on water and becoming submerged in waters just outside of Blue Lagoon.”

Skippings also gave details of rescue efforts, “I would say a reasonably short period of time, as indicated, they were able to get all of the passengers off the vessel.  Some of the passengers, we’re told, ended up in the water.  Some of them actually jumped from the vessel and they were rescued and they were brought here to Blue Lagoon Island.”

Representatives of the US Embassy in The Bahamas were also on the scene.  Public Affairs Officer Suemayah Abu-Douleh said, “we’re out here with Royal Bahamas Police Force (RBPF) and the Royal Bahamas Defence Force (RBDF).  We’re working with them and Blue Lagoon to get further details on the incident but we want to make sure our American citizen services was available for all American citizens who need any support or need any services.  We will continue to work with the RBPF to learn more details about what happened today.”

Two additional passengers were taken to hospital for treatment.
