From February 24-March 8, the U.S. government, in partnership with the Government of The Bahamas, is delivering critical medical and dental care to hundreds of Andros residents who typically lack access to these services. Through the Medical and Dental Civic Action Program (MEDCAP/DENCAP), U.S. military medical teams are treating 40 to 50 patients per day over two weeks, providing much-needed care to families, children, and elderly residents.
Minister of Health Dr. Michael Darville and Minister of State Leon Lundy joined the U.S. Embassy’s Chargé d’Affaires Kimberly Furnish in Fresh Creek to see the program in action. Minister Darville met with U.S. service members and local healthcare providers to explore ways to expand these efforts in the future.
The U.S. military team, including personnel from Marine Wing Support Squadron 272 (MWSS 272), the U.S. Navy’s 2d Dental Battalion, and 2d Medical Battalion, is offering basic medical checkups, dental exams, and health consultations. Many of the residents receiving care have limited or no access to regular medical services, making this outreach a life-changing opportunity. Local physicians and nurses are also collaborating with the team, gaining valuable insights into new medical approaches while identifying the most pressing health needs of the community.
In the second week, the program will focus on treating schoolchildren and families, ensuring young residents receive essential care. In addition to medical services, U.S. personnel will donate supplies and vaccines to help local healthcare providers continue supporting the community after the program ends.
“The gratitude from the community has been overwhelming, and this is just the first step” said U.S. Navy Commander Georgia McCrary. “We are committed to making this a routine initiative and tailoring future efforts to the specific healthcare needs of Andros.”
This collaboration reflects the deep and enduring partnership between the United States and The Bahamas, reaffirming a shared commitment to improving lives and strengthening connections through meaningful action.
