Western Air has announced a twice-weekly service from Grand Bahama to Bimini. The move serves to fill an inter-island connectivity void created by the suspension of flight operations by Flamingo Air. This came after a fatal plane crash involving a Flamingo Air aircraft occurred in North Andros on July 10th.
Western Air President and Chief Executive Officer, Sherrexcia Rolle told ZNS News the new service will operate on Mondays and Thursdays beginning on August 3rd. She said, “there are a few ways to travel between the islands. We do recognize that operations are a bit limited currently and we wanted to create an alternative that allows people to travel directly between the islands at least on a weekly basis.”
Rolle did not disclose the cost of tickets for the new flight route but did say customers can expect the cost to be more reasonable than flying through Nassau.
Member of Parliament for Bimini and the Berry Islands, Randy Rolle welcomed the news. He said, “after weeks of speaking with Western Air back and forth I am happy to learn of the new scheduled flights between Grand Bahama and Bimini. It is indeed a win for the people of Bimini and Grand Bahama. And so I’m grateful for the leadership of Western Air, for their support during this period and for their understanding. You know it was a little battle back and forth as to which day would actually work but I think this is a good start. They’re going to monitor it and if adjustments need to be made they will be. So, again, on behalf of the people of Bimini I’m very grateful.”
