Oh, to be young again! Energy, creativity, and community spirit are overflowing on Grand Bahama this summer, as more than seven free summer camps keep hundreds of children engaged in enriching activities throughout July and into August.
On Friday, July 18, Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Youth, Sports and Culture (MOYSC), Neil Campbell, alongside Head of the Division of Youth Sandena Neely, joined Grand Bahama Deputy Director of Sports Norris Bain and fellow Ministry officials for a tour across active campsites on the island—mirroring a nationwide effort to support youth programs.
PS Campbell expressed heartfelt thanks to facilitators, parents, and sponsors for helping to create safe, fun, and educational spaces. “These camps are not just fun and games—they’re a strategy,” he said. “They steer our young people toward purpose, discipline, and national pride.”
A highlight of the day came at Sister Mary Patricia Junior High, where children ages 6–17 are immersed in the vibrant world of Junkanoo and Bahamian culture. Camp coordinator Mr. Armaly, known for his dedication to nation-building, is teaching everything from basic design and pasting to mask and costume making. His passion for culture was evident, with PS Campbell commending him for “sacrificing time away from his museum to pour into the next generation.”
Stops on the tour included the YMCA, Eight Mile Rock Gymnasium, Walter Parker Primary, St. George’s Gym, and the Grand Bahama Sports Complex — all buzzing with youth exploring sports like flag football, softball, pickleball, karate, swimming, and more.
From museums, chocolate factories, to gymnasiums, from paper paste to volleyball nets—this summer, Grand Bahama’s children are not just staying busy; they’re building a brighter future.
