Minister of National Security, the Hon. Wayne Munroe appeared at a press briefing at the Office of the Prime Minister on Wednesday where he addressed, amongst other things, a call from Amnesty International to halt Haiti repatriations as unrest continues in that country.
Munroe told reporters, “the well being of The Bahamas does not permit us to accede to Amnesty International’s request. It didn’t permit him to sign the declaration of Los Angeles as the United States of America sought to impress on us to do. I am confident that this Prime Minister will never let down the people of The Bahamas and act against our interests.”
Munroe added, “the Royal Bahamas Defence Force, the Bahamas Department of Immigration are resolute in protecting the territorial integrity of this country, of apprehending irregular migrants and of repatriating them back to their home country wherever that may be.”
According to the Minister 156 migrants were flown to Inagua where the HMBS Lawrence Major then set sail bound for the port of Cap Haitien escorted by the HMBS Kamalame. In total 263 Haitian migrants have been repatriated.
