The 2024 Red Cross Ball was held at the Baha Mar Resort over the weekend under the theme ’50 Shades Of Red: A Golden Celebration. Governor General, Her Excellency Cynthia Pratt along with Wife of the Prime Minister, Ann Marie Davis and the Leader of the Opposition, the Hon. Michael Pintard were among those in attendance.

President of the Bahamas Red Cross Society, Edison Sumner spoke to ZNS News on the sidelines of event. He said, “its the 50th ball, so 50 Shades of Red and the red represents all of the different components and facets of the Red Cross Society, that shows how expansive the work in which we do and then of of course this being a golden celebration, fifty years. So we decided to culminated all of that into this night, package it into what you’re seeing represented here at the ball. It’s simply a spectacular thing that’s happening.”

Sumner added, “as president I’ve made some commitments and set some objectives and targets for us to achieve this year and that includes us improving on our technology infrastructure within the organization that will make work easier and better. We’re looking to engage more with our community being our stakeholders, our members, our volunteers, we really want to get them more engaged in the process. And as we go through building up on our financial resilience because everything we do revolves around our resource mobilization and that includes how we respond to disasters.”

The Bahamas Telecommunications Company (BTC) was the title sponsor of the ball. BTC Chief Executive Officer, Sameer Bhatti told ZNS that BTC increased its donation to the Red Cross to $30,000 in 2024, ten thousand dollars more than the previous year. ”For us as a part of our corporate social responsibility, one of our pillars is disaster relief. And that’s one of the key areas that the Red Cross is focused on. Whenever people in communities are in need in this country the Red Cross is there.”

This year marked the fiftieth year the Red Cross Ball has been held.
